Bus

Taking buses around Kenya can be a thrilling and sometimes dangerous, but an entertaining way to travel.  The roadways, though extensive, are hardly in good condition. Buses are poorly maintained, so the older they get, the worse off they are. Day routes are most common and only certain night routes are available (due to night security concerns, check with the bus company).

Bus companies include:

  • Akamba (Routes all over Kenya and East Africa)
  • Easy Bus
  • Eldoret Express
  • Coast Bus
  • Stallion Bus
  • Ascott Cooper (Nairobi to Kisii)
  • Modern Coast
  • MASH
  • Crown Bus
Train

It’s slow, clunky, and there are all sorts of unpredictable break-downs, but there is a train that runs in Kenya. The train offers three different classes, 1st class being the most luxurious with personal beds. There are only 2 train routes: Nairobi to Mombasa and Nariboi to Kisumu.

Plane

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is among the best functioning and busiest airports in Sub-Saharan Africa. In recent years, Kenya Airways has done a great job of connecting cities in Africa and the rest of the world with Nairobi. Kenya Airways flights are by no means cheaply priced, but they do maintain a high level of safety while participating in Sky Team Alliance.

There are a number of more affordable airlines that offer quick domestic flights as well as short jaunts around East Africa including Fly 540, an East African budget airline with decent prices that makes it easy to fly from Nairobi to Mombasa. Air Kenya and African Express are both also worth a look.
