I spent a couple months in early 2008 volunteering and I am now convinced that it’s the best way to see the world. There are loads of great causes out there and I’m going to do my best to spend some of my time volunteering with them or maybe even raising some money. Check them out, send a donation or, even better, try to hook up with them somewhere to help in person and have an amazing experience in the process.
Hands On Disaster Response
I spent a two months with these guys in Bangladesh doing everything from digging holes to playing with kids to putting walls onto houses. It was probably the best thing I’ve ever done. Wow, that’s saying a lot. But it’s true! They do some great stuff so check them out.
Burma Volunteer Program
I’ve been meaning to volunteer with the Burma Volunteer Program in Northern Thailand for years now but I think I’m letting my lack of English teaching experience scare me away. The minimum time requirement is three months which can be tricky to slot in but I know it’d be an amazing experience and hope to visit them soon.
